Guys: Anyone into Engineering during the War the above book might be a good one to add to the library. Mentioned in the book is the Allis Chalmers HD16M Dozer.
Interesting discussion about the machinery used in the early Nam effort. Will be adding this book to the library very soon. Orangeman

I think the first tractors fitted with the rome plow were HD16Ms in Vietnam, or among the first anyway. There are a couple of US military films from that era that have 16Ms in them- I think one is called "1st Infantry in Vietnam", can't recall what the other one was, but is is on Youtube. My cousin has a 16M, I've always thought it would be a cool project to paint it green again (it has been painted yellow).

Yes, the 16M was the military 16DP, with a few changes.

Yeah, those military tractors have two seats- one for the operator and one for the "shotgun rider". The 16M was turbocharged from the factory, whereas the DP was not, although many have since been turbo'd. According to the Swinford book, over 800 16Ms were built.
The most common American military tractor is the D7. Lots of D7Es were used during the "conflict in South-east Asia." Some D9s too, and the Australians had D8s. Would like to find someone who knows more about that... I worked with a guy a few years back who spent a year with a D7 in Vietnam. Tough place to be. I don't know where that picture was taken, and I can't even remember where I got it from, to tell the truth. If you search for "rome plow" lots of pictures come up on the net. I've always been fascinated by the whole idea- working in the bush is dangerous enough without having someone trying to kill you! Still I'd rather do that than tramp around in the jungle all day with a rifle.
