Can someone tell me the angle of the steering shaft from horizontal on a B vs an IB? I know the IB steering shaft is shorter and steeper, and the steering box is moved towards the rear of the tractor, but the angle difference would be most helpful. Thanks in advance. |

i dont have right handy, can get later... there are no mounts to move the steering box backward on a B to match the IB angle. you would need to manufacture an offset bracket, or weld new lugs onto the B torque tube. That is one problem wiht making a B into a IB. THe wheel sets low toward your knees if you use the standard B setup.

Thanks, Steve. I plan to make a bracket to move the steering box backward similar to IB P/N 210864. I'd just like the angle to know what I'm shooting for when I mark the holes.

take a picture of that bracket when you get done. are you going to anchor the back of the bracket or just bolt it to the existing 3 mounts and let it span backward several inches???

I will do that, Steve. Like AC P/N 210864, the bracket mounts to the two bosses cast on the torque tube, offsets the thickness of the bracket towards the back of the tractor the length of the steering sector mounting bolts. ( about 6" or slightly less) I'm about half done, and it looks like 1/2" stock will be plenty stout.
I've also moved the brake pedals forward 9", and am working on doing the same with the clutch pedal. I'm also adding the foot throttle to override the hand quadrant like the IB. Challenging, but a lot of fun.

The bracket to change the steering angle is not complete by any stretch, but well on the way. The view is front of tractor on the left. The side with the holes mounts to the existing steering box torque tube mounting holes. The side on the right rests on the torque tube, and offsets to the other side of the tractor to get the new steering box mounting on the same "plane" as when it was mounted to the torque tube bosses. The steering box will be moved rearward approximately 7", and tipped steeper, to 43 degrees, +/-. I have not drilled the holes to mount the steering box in the new position as yet, in that I need to have this piece welded first and mount the gas tank to confirm clearance. This will give me a bit of "wiggle room". Edited by GBACBFan - 22 Nov 2009 at 1:29pm |

Here is a back view showing the bracket relieved on the bottom to fit the contour of the torque tube casting around the mounting holes.

And here's the mock-up on a B moving the steering box back 7", with the steering shaft set at the steeper 43 degrees of the IB.

looks like your on your way now. I have cut the steering shaft to the wheel about a foot from the top and taken out 6 inches on a couple of B tractors. I like the steering wheell setting closer to the gas tank and a little further from the seat. You can put a short rod inside the shaft to keep it aligned when you reweld.... Not sure what the length of the IB is compared to the standard B. Do you need that or just setting it "comfortable".
