It has always puzzeld me but what are the differences between the B, C, and the CA tractor. I've looked at several up close and even www.tractordata.com seems to point out that they are the same basic tractor with changes in front ends and seats.
I don't have any of the three but me and my friend were hoping you guys could help us out.

The simple answer: Yes.
The real correct answer: Yes, but no The 100% correct answer: Yes, up to a point. The B and the C are basicly the same tractor, with the B set up as a 1 row tractor and the C being set up as a 2 row tractor. Early B's however have the BE 116 Cubic Inch Engine, while the later B's and (from what I have found and heard) all the C's had the CE 125 Cubic Inch Engine. The CA was introduced and shared the same CE engine that the later B's and all C's had, but introduced a new transmission that had 4 forward gears, 1 reverse, a new, more powerful hydraulic system, a hand clutch for operation of the roto-baler and other equipment, and a new, redesigned torque tube that had 2 mounting holes in the middle for certain mounted implements. Later B's also featured this new torque tube. The CA also came out with the new traction booster system, and the pin hitch and (later) snap coupler implement mounting systems. Hope this helps. Any more questions, feel free to ask.

The B being narrower that the C or CA for cultivating one row of a crop where the C was for cultivating two rows of a crop. The B has faster final gears than the C.

The CA stands for Cat's A^&.
A really fine tractor. We used the C for cultivating 70 acres of potatoes for years. Great two row tractor. |

If you are looking to buy a "B", "C" or "CA" I would go for the "CA".
The "CA" is more like a small "WD". It has more HP than the "B" & "C", it has the same hydraulic system as the "WD" & "WD-45", 4 forward gears vs. the "B" & "C"s 3 forward gears and the "CA" has the power shift rear wheels.
Also with the "CA"'s redesigned front and torque tube it is easier to mount the equipment.

I did forget the hand clutch. The "CA" came 3 ways;
1) with out a hand clutch.
2) with a hand clutch on the right side.
3) with a hand clutch on the left side.

I've heard the CA described as 2/3 of a WD.

I enjoy using mine very much. For a small tractor it does everything that I need and want it to do. It can pull a 3-14 8 inchs deep in sod has well as run a #90 All-Crop off the PTO. What more can I ask? For all that know me should be able to tell you that I don't baby my "CA" nor do I abuse it or miss state what I have or can do with my little old "CA".

I have the 8' mounted disc and it pulls with relative ease. Really surprised me the first time I tried it. However those mounted discs IMO are pretty light weight discs.

WKPOOR, I don't know of any video and I think that is the only picture there is as well. The picture was taken at the AC Jamboree in Davis IL at Ted buiskers place. I was discing the ground that was just plowed. I think that was my 2nd pass over the field. If you look real close you can see that the lift chains on the disc are hanging down which means I am letting that disc dig as deep as it wants.

I got a couple of PMs about the little AC book today. I posted about the book seven years ago. I’ll need to dig around some old data sticks to see if I still have it, I’m pretty sure I do.

For pulling I matched the manifold ports to the head after reaming or boring out the head. What for pistons do you have in the B? There is difference in the manifold and head ports in size from the start in 1938. |
