My '47 B has developed a significant oil leak from the transmission to torque tube joint. I suspect the front seal in the transmission is shot. Can it be replaced by splitting the tractor at that joint?  Can the seal be replaced without pulling the whole transmission apart?

By looking at the manual I have, you split the torque tube from the front of the tranny, remove a pin or cotter key and then separate them. The seal should be right there in front.

Thanks, Charlie.  I've got a dealership service manual and it is extremely vague on this operation, which is unusual in that they are usually quite detailed.
I'll tear into it on Monday.

I had to replace that seal on my CA. I also re-gasketed the lower gear shaft cover cap below it while I was in there.

If I remember correctly when my B had that problem many years ago, when I split the tractor at the tranny there was  amouse nest at the rear of the tourqe tube and ahole had rusted through the thin steel cap that covers the lower bearing. a little epoxy and evicting the mice fixed the leak. Then trying to find a dive shaft with a good spline was another problem, Cal in Ct.

Got the tractor split today and found the problem. The seal was a little loose in the seal retainer and the oil was leaking out between the seal and the retainer.  The leather on the seal seems to be OK and it fits snug on the shaft. I'm going to replace it anyway. I have already installed a new gasket on the lower bearing cap.
