The story as was told to me....No petroleum lubes because they turn to carbon under heat and time which then abraids the oring causing it to fail.Oil from the crankcase isn't encased in the groove so not a problem

I have used dish washing detergent. I have not figured out yet what protects them from the engine oil in the crankcase. Go figure.

The cats meow for lubing rubber is silicone grease, sold in a small squeeze tube at Napa or other auto parts stores. A little goes a long way, won't harm rubber and is slicker than hog crap on a wet pasture. Don't get it where you plan to paint later on, ie wash your hands good after lubing up the orings and slipping them on the sleeves.

Lube them up good with liquid dish soap.
Do not use motor oil or grease made from oil.

The cross section is round on what I have seen. They may look square after 60+ years in the groove.

Are the sealing rings for the bottom of the old 3 1/4 bore sleeves square cut or just plain O-rings smashed into a square groove and where is the best place to get them from.
