Need? Probably not. I run a one wire delco mainly for convenience. And I have an electric fan and some pulls I go to there is quite a distance from the track and where you can park.

I run one, have the on /off option. Starving the ignition defeats the purpose of any modifications.
C, WD45,WD puller, 185, 200, 7060 Red Belly, 7060 Black Belly,8010, and a R52 Gleaner, AND PROUD OF THEM!

As long as you have a good battery i would think u would be fine.  I understand were you are coming from. I wouldnt worry about running an alt. but how much do you think u are going to gain off not running one.

We run them on ours, but if you keep up on the battery, I see no reason where you would have to have one.

Why bother with an alternator. Not haveing one is a good excuse to keep from starting the tractor and messing around. That cummins starts quick, you'll have many weeks worth of pulling before running the battery down.

I'm just makeing a cord to plug the tractor into the pickup so I can charge it a bit between classes if I end up starting it a few times....it cranks a long time to start, and we've got a MSD8, coil and data logger sucking juice.

have not had a working one on mine in 6 years. mine is coming off now and I run electric fuel pump and now fan. just put a charger on your tractor about once a month.

I plug my tractor into a connection (on the rear bumper) I made while it's loaded on the trailer and trickle charge on the way to and from a Pull. I can go a whole Summer and never charge a battery that way. The battery is up when I get to a Pull and up when I get back home.

I must say I really like this idea I'm not sure how well it would work for me beings I only drive twelve miles to my local pulls but i still may try this

I would think it greatly depends on the demand. A diesel other than firing the motor up would not need anything up front to do the charging chores. But, a gas job with electronic ignition, some high compression, electric fan or fuel pump, and maybe some ignition enhancer of some sort, yes. On occasion, do you pull at night where you may need lights? If you don't have an electric fan, or fuel pump, you may be fine without and Alt on a gas job, and run a deep cell Marine style Battery to satisfy the needs on board. Tough one to call. For me, if it was a gasser, with those options I mentioned, I'd opt for the Alt. to keep the Battery top notch to power those accessories. Electric fans and fuel pumps eat power, especially when their both on at the same time. But, I'm not a pullin' guy, I'm just and electrical dude....Its still your call....

All I have is the starter and ignition too. I've never had a issue but its a good idea giving the battery some charge to and from the pull.

The more I think about it, I dont think I could go without one on my tractor. There are pulls where I might have to make 2 or 3 passes and a fair amount of time spent running. Between my fuel pump and electric fan and electric water injection, it would be really close for me.

Personally Bob, I would opt for the Alt.  Three wire version, this way between rounds if you have it running, it'll be putting reserve power back in the Battery and keeping the Battery in tip top shape. If any of you fellers are running E.I.'s, electric fuel pump(s) and or electric fan(s) (like ACFarmer there) you'll want the Battery in top shape to run these accessories. They all take power to run, and when first turned on, is when they really gulp the amps till they're in run mode. An Alternator really doesn't take much HP to operate if its dialed in on the other pulleys perfectly. As I mentioned earlier, its your call. I'm not a pullin' guy, but I am an electrical guy, and I know what eats power and what doesn't. If I was pullin', I'd have a small 42 amp "SI" hanging up front just to keep the Battery tickled and up. All the accessories that you guys run (other than a Mag of coarse) takes power to run. Turn all them things on at the same time, and you're asking a lot from your Battery that isn't getting replenished. Eventually, the Battery is going to loose its snap literally at the end of the season with running low, running low, and recharge after recharge. Just a thought. In my wiring systems for pullers, I set the systems up for the different accessories used on board the Tractor so everything runs on the money without a problem. You guys are pre-occupied with dialing in your motors, tire pressures wieghts and whatever. You don't need to have other silly problems plaguing you to....

Would a small alternator, like a 20A as used on some commercial zero turns and similar equipment be a cat's meow to what you are trying to accomplish?
These alternators are about 1/3 rd the thickness of a 10SI or similar.
 
I seem to remember a picture of one mounted on a "G" and a really neat unit.
 
 
I don't recall who posted this, maybe he'll chime in here and enlighten everyone.
