   I am thinking of buying a Allis 5040. Does anyone know of any problems with them? Such as does the 3 cyl diesel motor give a lot of problems or the transmission. Also are the part easy to come by? Or anything else I need to check for when I try it out? I was told the power steering was a little lose on it. Anyone else has problem with that. Thanks

	I have one and I love it. I haven’t had to buy any parts, the engine purrs like a kitten. There are several places online to get parts. My steering is fine, not sure what yours is doing. I run a 6’ bush hog behind mine and it’s also my baling tractor pulling a new Holland 311 square baler.

	You will hear lots of folks like the 5000 series tractors even it’s an import like as my 160. I think wiring harness was a weakness over time but my cousin has a 5050 with over 10k hours on it and he has only had to replace the clutch and brakes. Parts may be an issue since it’s an import, at least it’s hard to get some things for my 160. I think the Long tractors were the same tractor? Gary Burnett would know for sure, he likes those series of tractor’s.

	Had one. They're tough little 40hp tractors. The 6-sp transmission shift lever is very loose; sometimes hard to "find the slot". IDK about the 8 (9) or 12 speeds. The neutral safety switch went bad and as I never looked for a replacement it took some doing to rebuild it. What is the problem with the steering? Are the rod-ends wore ? The steering on mine was very easy, even with a 400 loader. If the front grill is cracked or broken, that can be a problem to find a replacement. I don't know what it's made of, but it's not common fiberglass. Seems to be some kind of expanded foam that has a hard outer layer added. If you buy the tractor, get the Service manual...you'll need it. Jensales has one; but they're not the only source.

	I have several of the Fiat tractors 3 and 4 cylinder.good tractors but they have their quirks like the PTO is going to scrape a little when its put into gear no matter what you do.Steering gearbox gets worn,take out the plug and put in a grease fitting and pack it full of JD corn head grease.Parts are easy to come by and less expensive than for most tractors these days.

	I have a 5040 my dad bought new in 1978, really a handy unit, sips fuel, i have used it on a New Holland 479 haybine and 273 thrower baler, no issues, also works great on 8 foot tedder, issue with mine, pops out of 1st and 4th gear, which is same slot, first being low range and 4th high range, i just do not use those gears, also i have to shut off tractor to get pto engaged, it has a 2 stage clutch, needs to be pressed to the floor boards, this one still does not stop rotating, otherwise, very handy and economical tractor.
