Guys,
I struggled a little but did get the snap rings back in place. Have a new correct size seal which will go right behind the new brake drum. Kind of glad I am changing that bad brake drum. It should last as long as the great grand-kids want to play with the tractor! Making some progress but it's slow. The weather is still good. I would like to paint these final drives this week.
Thanks for the support on this old CA puller project.
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

Allis folks,
I got the new seal and did the best I could to install it. It's in there but I would have liked to do better. one area did not go down into the bore as it should. I think it will seal on the shaft OK.
I cleaned up the wood-ruff key and installed it in the shaft. Then heated the brake drum to 500 deg F on the range top. Slid it on to the shaft and still had to pound it to the home position with a piece of pipe and an 8 lb sledge. Maybe I should have heated it more?
But it is on the shaft and in the correct location, locked in place with the screw and lock nut, an Allis standard item.
Some clean up and then will fill the pan with gear oil and install it on the final drive casting below the bull gear.
Keep moving forward a little at a time.
Regards,
Chris and Cheryl

Might try putting the shaft in the freezer. I did that to the steering shaft when assembling the heated gear to it. It was -10 that day. Still needed a pipe and 2lb hammer to drive it on.
Better yet,get yourself a 20T press

Plummer,
Folks,
It would not be easy to put that entire final drive unit in my freezer! And I gave my 30 ton press to my son about 10 years ago. The heating of the brake drum worked. Just need to be ready to move the brake drum with a BFH if required.
We have a new project in the shop today also. Friend John brought his 46 Ford Super Deluxe four door, over to work on brakes and new wiring. That should fill in the gaps to keep us up and moving, if we run out of Allis projects.
I shuffled Allis tractors in the small shop today. Only have 6 tractors in there! Got the snow plow blade on the D14. We are ready for winter!

Folks
As the weather cools down in our neck of the woods, I decided to paint primer and top coat on the final drives and the front pedestal.

I did get them painted. Waiting for paint to dry.
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

Dan, Folks,
Thanks! Some additional shots as the paint was drying yesterday.

More small parts cleaned and sand blasted today. Also putting the IH portions of the wheel weights through several sessions in the E-tank.
I may go look at a couple CA tractors up in Grape country this week. Friend John's dad has a large collection with some CA's in there too.
Having this shop sure helps me get some things done easier. Not having a dedicated paint area is a problem, but we just keep going.
Side note:
We took the Comet to Erie for pizza tonight. Was nice to just take a ride.

Thanks guys,
More small parts and fasteners cleaned today. Doesn't seem like much but all these parts need to be touched, cleaned, primed, and painted. Yikes! Most parts have been bagged and tagged, and that helps sort things out.
Still have sheet metal parts like hood, tank, and the grill to be worked on.
The weather has been great unusual for November.

Guys,
I am going to try to space the engine out a inch and a half more on the engine stand to try to get the oil pump on and the rear seal inside the aluminum plate in place. I assume I need to oil the felt seal on the rear of the crank as it is installed?
I could just set this block on the table but would like to flip the engine to install the pan gasket and pan too, so if I can keep it on the stand that would be an advantage!
I just put the second side weight for the side of the engine in the E-tank. Not sure if I will use them but it keeps the tank busy and the paint just falls off in big chunks.

Off topic but I needed a new phone. The phone case had cracked and the battery was visible. So after a new phone was set up this old one was destroyed. My uncles bench vise did the trick:

Things are moving slowly as we work on a maple syrup event in our shop tomorrow.
Our friend John has his 1946 Ford fordor in the shop also. He is putting in a brand new repro wiring harness. The lift will help him complete it easier too.
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

I was surprised how well the e-tank would assist in paint removal. Discovered that when cleaning the PA wheel clamps. Speeds up time in the blast cabinet as well.
Looks good. Great progress.

Chris, I hated my second cell phone that much, still have it all these years later just haven't bought the tannerite to give a proper send-off yet! Since I haven't had to deal with it for 15 years or so, kind of low priority now.

Folks,
Need a couple kicks to get going on the CA project again. The other front side weights is almost ready to be wire brushed from the E tank. It does save a lot of clean up time on painted and rusty parts. Really need to get the remaining engine components into the cleaning process too. Some cant go in the E tank as they are the carb and the distributor components. Each item has its own little adventure. Some of the parts need repaired and or rebuilt to be in better condition.
We have much needed rain in our area. Very dry for the last month.
I received this last night :

Guys,
Mike I used a half roll of paper towels and solvent and dirt was still coming off the block. At some point it will just be enough.
Realized the front cover for the governor used the bolts and the pins on the front cover. So some of these items may get added prior to paint work. But I needed to tighten that gasket down so it worked ok. Also on the lowered studs I put some 1.2 inch copper spacers and the nuts to keep that gasket tight also.
Trying to get a little done each day on the CA. Some days not so much. Got the Copper gasket spray for the head gasket. Installed the head and torqued from the center outward. Cleaned up the housing for the distributor in the blaster.

And thanks for checking in on me.
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

Might be better to clean up the existing ones, given the extremely poor quality of modern replacement electrical parts!

Phil, folks,
Good suggestion! I just might do that on the points. They did not look that bad. I need to spend some time cleaning fasteners and small parts. I need too build a poor man's paint booth for a bunch of these small items.

Allis folks,
So the side weights on a CA. I assume this plug is supposed to be bolted to the front ear of the tractor? This one is stuck and will need some encouragement. The other one is missing. Are these available?

Tonight I added the front governor gasket and cover to the front of the CA engine.

Allis guys,
I decided to review the oil pump. After starting to open it up, I realized it was going to take some more work. Two of the three screws broke off, with about 1/8 inch sticking out of the oil pump housing. Yikes this is going to take just a little bit of noodling! I decided to try welding something to the top of the remaining screw protrusion. John gave me an idea to use a large socket to fill the oil pump cavity during welding. I added the electrical tape. This was to keep any splatter out of the pump cavity.

I usually do the washers with a nut welded on top, but decided to scale the concept to a counter sunk hole in a 1/8 inch strip of steel.

First two times it failed, and broke the weld.Went to the other broken one, This  time I brought out the blue tip.
Heated the housing at the screw location. Bingo the screw came right out! Back to the shorter one and the same process worked to remove it too.

I bought a gallon of carb cleaner today at NAPA. Soaking the CA carb. Will order a carb kit for it tomorrow.
John cleaned a bunch of the small CA fasteners for me. Maybe that is for me helping him a little on his 46 Ford? He also wants me to go with him to his Dads place to look at a couple CA tractors, That sounds like trouble for sure!
I installed the front cover for the governor gear, on the front of the engine. Ordered new manifold studs, washers and brass nuts, from Sandy Lake.

Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

Well done on the broken screws!!
I have soaked carbs in carb cleaner and it does a good job. Recently I bought an ultrasonic cleaner cuz the Holley 4 barrel doesn't fit in the gallon and the 5 gallon is quite pricy. I'm very pleased how that worked. Even cleaned a couple filthy carbs for Wisconsin engines. They turned out good except it doesn't work on corrosion.

.

+1 I have also had great luck with an ultrasonic cleaner and three tractor carbs so far.

My AC WD carb halves plus a little basket of little parts fit in the $75 harbor freight small cleaner. Three cycles worked well. Dawn soap, orange degreaser mixed in water.

Try to find non-ethanol fuel, rec fuel, for the last of the season tractor use. Ethanol gums up bad in six months even if "stabilizers" are used or premium fuel.

Folks,
All of the tractors have ethanol fuel. So maybe it wont do any good with Stabil added?

Order a carb kit and new hoses for the rad, also new sediment bowl assembly. Just trying to keep moving on this project. I took the IH split wheel weights off the rims and have one in the E-tank for cleaning. Rim disassembly is on the list too, as the centered are very pitted and the rims need sanded and repainted.

Hope things are good in orange land!

I purchased a Vevor digital ultrasonic cleaner 16L two months ago. It’s 3 times the size of the largest one Harbor freight sells. Theirs is $179. I paid $125 and free shipping. It has heat up to 140 degrees and a timer up to 30 minutes. I recommend it, it cleaned my D14 carb up really well. Never used one before but I’m a firm believer now. I mixed 50/50 water and Super clean. Brother Charlie suggested a ultrasonic cleaner, he was right, it does a nice job.
