I just bought an allis chalmers 200 that before I bought it I was told it probably needed a head gasket because it over heats but only under load !! I drove it home which took 3 hours and the water temp just barely reached the beginning of the green on an AC water temp guage ! There is no visible leakage on the head gasket on the out side and the tractor runs great ! Does anyone have any ideas ?

Yeah, if it ain't broke; don't fix it! But seriously, watch for excess pressure, or bubbling in the radiator, look for anti-freeze in the oil, and oil in the anti-freeze. Monitor everything closely, and run it. Darrel

Welcome to the forum Don,you must have bought the one from Baldwin? If the head gasket is leaking it will cause the radiator to bubble over under load. The turbo builds boost in the cooling system when under load. My 8550 did the same thing last year. No trace of coolant in the oil but get it under some pull and out the cap it goes.

Sure it's not a dirty radiator? My experience with blown head gaskets, the engine will get hot regardless of load, as hot gasses are getting into the cooling system. If you drove it for three hours, and it didn't get hot, or blow coolant out the radiator, I would be looking else where. Just my two cents.

Our 200 did the same thing. We took the bottom an top hosees off and the radiator was pluged. We ran garden hose into the bottom to like back flush it. Took some time to get it opened up. We took the thermostat out so that it would flush around a bit. And put it back in. Works fine now.

Better chance of dirty radiator inside or thermostat than head gasket. MACK

Are the fan belts tight enough and not worn out and running on the bottoms of the pulleys?

Either way,I would pull the radiator and go get it boiled and checked out by a competent radiator shop.Old enough to need it!

Yeah. I would boil the radiator first and go from there. 200 is a great tractor!
