My son's 91 F150 150K miles refused to respond to drive position after filling with gas on the way home from work. Reverse was fine.
after sitting for a while as I hooked up trailer to go 30 miles and get him, he tried again and it went fine so he drove home slowely. Next morning back to no forward. Then with no apparent changes, he has forward but only 1st gear. What he describes is just a no shift symptom. Not a slipping, just no shift. With not much to lose, he did a fluid and filter change. No improvement. Had a friend with a known rebuilt AOD transmisson the same as his but the engine started knocking sell him the whole truck. So he swapped. Same symptom. he's very frustrated and its his service truck, so he is losing $$ by not working. I'm not an automatic transmission person, or really even a fan of automatics. IS there anyone that can consult with him for ideas? Phone, email, text, smoke signals?

E4OD had a serious design flaw, splines on mainshaft of earlier models very fine spline, they would destroy the hub they sat in and the trans would or could not upshift.
My 99F259 has the upgrade version 700R4. Did the exact same thing only at 280,000 dragging my gooseneck. Managed to get to site to unload, all good, backed into spot to unload and as empty pulled out to fjnd only low gear. Shop I had to take to dropped pan, full of fine metal particles, bought an exchange reman. |

Replace the ‘gear position safety switch’. Cost about $100.00 -$120.00 from any of the major auto parts retailers. Instructions should be in the box, on how to precisely ‘set’ the new switch.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

Thanks for the guys but it's not e4od it's an aod as the title says.
The neutral safety switch has nothing to do with 1st to 2nd shifting. That switch only prevents starting if not in neutral or park. |

Jim... i really dont know, but the "switch" has more than 2 wires to it and the transmission is somewhat "electrical"..... here is one guys post to the photo... i just though if the trans is not the problem... it has to be some electrical component ??

Not on the aod. Only 1 electrical plug that feed the reverse light and neutral safety
It has no electrical input for control at all. I think you are confused with a different trans than the aod. |

I owned 6 of those, we used them for on the farm tire repair trucks. You might as well have it overhauled. 4 of the 6 we had did the same thing. It used to cost 3000.00 to fix one. 2 of those trucks had 2 tranny's put in, one had 3 tranny's put in. All of them had rebuilt motors put in them. All were ford rebuilds. We finally bought a Chevy with the 6.2 diesel and ran it 300000 miles with no problems.

yea. i was not knocking you Jim... just saying " lets rebuild the transmission" does not seem like the best idea at this time.. If the "SPARE" was really a rebuild, i would not expect it to have the exact same problems...... But with a MECHANICAL controlled transmission, all you have left is the cable / control / lever in the cab... Dont see that being a big possibility either ?

He may have found it, and believe it or not, the problem was present on 3 valve bodies. It was a stuck solenoid. He had pulled one from a salvage yard in desperation as his first attempt. But he has found the same stuck solenoid on all 3 bodies. He is installing a drain plug now :) and getting ready to reassemble.

very simple and robust design to this one. I have one in my backhoe loader with a power shuttle in front of it. No reverse gear in the transmission as the shuttle reverses so have four forwards, and four reverse speeds.
