Working on an 8070 and at pto speed the engine starts to chatter or shudder and puff smoke and it has me stumped! Remanned pump and injectors, new fuel line from tank to pump,all new filters,have had timing all over and it helps nothing,compression is ok,timing gears are tighter than alot I've seen. I would love to hear a cure for this or any ideas that you can think of . Thanks in advance ! Dave.

Start from the beginning. What did you originally have for a problem???? when was the reman injection pump installed???? how do you know the timing gears are "tighter than a lot I've seen"?? did you have the front cover off??? It sounds like the typical "goosey governor" on an AmBach pump but they usually do it at a little slower speeds and don't do it under a load at all.

Well I got into this one in the middle I think the guy told me that he had the pump redone and it didnt run right . So I took it off and sent it in again and same thing then I talked to them and they said bring it back and they traded me again and still the same. I was just going off of the backlash at the pump drive to see if it was way loose and not bad. The guy runs a big square baler with it and right at the speed he needs to run it is terrible! I just took it for another drive and at2100 it starts and at 2500 it comes out of it it is so bad it is shaking everything lose under the hood! It smokes in puffs just driving down the road I have never had this problem some of them will do it a little but nothing like this one. I am open to anything I am running out of options. does it have adequate oil pressure? The model 100 pump needs oil pressure for the intravance.

This will make a mess, but maybe nail down what the problem is. Tractor in Park and Power Shift in 4th gear, remove the top cover on the injection pump. Takes a 7/16" socket to remove the four bolts.....probably better have all the bolts out of it but one?? Have someone sit in the seat and move the throttle up to the point it where does it's thing and remove the cover and see if the governor is quivering back and forth. If it is, stick your finger on it to stop it from jumping around and if that is the problem, you need to tighten down the tension spring on the governor linkage you're looking at until there is definite "drag" on the linkage. Many pump repair shops can't seem to get this adjustment correct on a test bench. There will be engine oil spraying out of the pump with the cover removed.

DR is correct! there was some sensitivity issues on AC, they even issued a bulletin, to re-shim the gov springs.

Dr Allis is spot on , every reman 100 pump I have gotten has this adjustment set too loose.

Engine off.....open hand throttle up to just a tad above the idle position. The nut you are going to tighten up is on the top of that governor aparatus that is quivering. Takes a 7/16" open wrench. Usually the nut is so loose you can just see the coil spring underneath the nut. Nut/bolt is 90 degrees to the crankshaft. With your finger, operate the governor arm by pulling it rearwards towards the cab and then let go.....it should spring forward. Now, tighten this nut (and by tightening I mean counterclockwise from where you are standing) until when you pull back on the governor and let go, it just barely moves all the way back forward with things in the idle position. When I did it, I usually cleaned the threads with brake kleen and air dried it and dribbled some loctite on the threads and then quickly adjusted the nut in hopes the glue would keep it locked in place.
