i just purchased a 6080 , use it to pull a 15' batwing and love the power and fuel economy , (i can be seen most nights throwing rocks at my tw 20 as i pull past it ) the tractor was bought at auction and has a loader and 12 /3 trans , the only problem i can see is a loud whine/groan in the intermediate range ( louder and faster w increase in gear and speed ) changed fluid and filters no improvement , thanks for any help joe

Have one with 7000 hrs. on it and it has growled like you discribed for years. We just turn the radio up and keep going. Yours is probably OK also.

Mine is like that too.  Has not caused any problems so far.

I own an early (late '81)  6080 that also whines in the mid ranges rather noticeably. It is most noticeable in 3rd and 4th.. with 4th giving me a headache if I use the tractor for more than a few hours without ear protection... open station ROPS model.  I asked the AGCO dealer about this... got no response..which is par for the course with this particular dealer. I thought the former owner(s) ran the transmission low on oil...  at one time..as this is one of the few , I'm told, of the 6080s that pump oil from the transmission into the rear end... always checking..always adding... always removing .. always a pain.. that's why it sits in the shed most of the time.

so there is only one hole for trans oil ? just wanted to make sure i wasnt missing something important , looks like ill be splitting it this winter , as my radio aint loud enough to drown it out , thanks for the help

There is a hole at the trans , and also the other compartment - 2 check places

It's my understanding that the right side plug on the transmission is for checking and adding oil. The back end/hydraulic system has a plug as well, although a bit higher on the case, just to the rear of the transmission plug. The back end/hydraulic system is checked using the dip stick located at the rear of the tractor..on the PTO housing..and filled at this point as well... am I missing something???. I drain the over full oil using a hydraulic hose off one of the SCVs dumping into a container...to be used to add oil to the transmission... thanks

i have heard mention of a range oil some place is this a fact or is it all in the gear box ? im aware of the dip stick in the rear and the fill / overflow on the right side behind the pto clutch lever , any other place to check or add fluids ?

I have a parts tranny if you need any parts. There were at least 3 6080s in our area that fryed the tranny by only filling at the holle in the rear housing. They thought the rearend and trans used the same fluid. I sold my good tranny to a guy in Toronto that had done the same.

thanks brian, just to be sure , i have a 6080 and have changed the rearend / hydrolic fluid , filter, and cleaned screen . also drained and re filled the gearbox drain in the bottom and fill on the rt side just behind the pto clutch linkage . is these the only places that get oil as far as the drive line goes ? thanks joe

Joe; I am not sure on that, I have never done a service on a 6080 myself. You should get some replies from someone in the know.

Sounds right. There are two plugs on the right side the front one is the transmission fluid check and fill hole. The second one to the rear of the first plug is not used on the 6080 as far as I know. Perhaps Fiat used it in another tractor application..as the 6000 series is a Fiat except for the engine and sheet metal. The rear end is checked and filled at the rear housing above the PTO, on the right side. I would have to conclude from another post that many 6080s lost transmission fluid into the rear end and some (perhaps many) owners by not checking the transmission fill plug level, ran the tranny a bit low and fried the tranny. I'm not sure how many of these 6080s had the problem, but it beginning to look like many early models may have. One post I read awhile back, suggested that one enterprising farmer ran a hydraulic fluid line from the rear compartment plug to the transmission plug. You have to run the rear end a bit high in fluid but I suspect that if you use a clear line you can easily figure out where the level in the rear needs to be to keep the tranny full. I will retrofit my 6080 in this fashion sometime this winter.

thanks again , ill prob do the same on mine after i get it tostop making the noise , did not know these were italian tractors in american armor ! so much for thinking i had a real piece of american iron , every thing i looked at on this was delco not denso so i was sold , now i can see why the tranny makes noise , oh well at least its not built in china along with everything else .
