301 Diesel Engine

Thanks, It's a 76 so its got the hardened gears. I guess the only thing left to figure out will be the oil pan clearance. I believe the motor I am looking at came out of an M.

301 diesels were in Gleaner models "F", "G", "M" and some"L"'s......"N" series were 426 only. Hard timing gears including the cam gear were introduced in late 1971 or so in ALL 301 engines regardless of application. Any camshaft gear that has the long bolt retaining it is a hard gear. All model 200 tractors were hard gears and any 185 or Gleaner combine 1972 and up for sure. Rear plate from a 200 will work. Oil pan may hit the front axle if you try and use the deep pan so change the pan and oil pump back to the original style. This swap will be more work than you think....good luck.

So you didnt have any clearance issues with the front axle? And the rear adapter plate off a 200 will work?

You'll probably want to change the cam gear, as the 301 engines that were designed for an engine mounted hydraulic pump had a hardened gear whereas the other engines had soft gears.  This may pertain to all timing gears up front and not just the cam gear, but for sure at least the cam gear, although some have not had a problem with using a soft cam gear on a tractor with an engine mounted hydraulic pump.

The rear pivot plate at the torque housing is longer on the 185's that had a crank driven oil pump. I just put a 301 in my 185. It was cam driven and now is crank driven. That part was not a problem other than finding the bracket.  My rear bracket came off of a 200.

The oil pump is cam driven and is in about the center of the pan. Now that you mention it, i do remember the oil pan looking different on the combine motor.

was your 185 oil pump crank driven? if so, fairly simple. If not, oil pan/front axle clearance issues will need attention. rear adapter plate from your 185 engine, not sure on the front plate. I know 426's need it swapped or modified from combine to tractor. good luck.

I am looking to swap a 649 combine motor from like an L M or N into my 185. Besides the adaptor plates, what else needs to be changed to bolt this engine up?
