Hi all,

I have a few questions for you all.
Dad picked up a new toy today.  A H3 dozer.  Serial # 8231.   Gas engine, based off of a D15 tractor so we are familiar with many things on it because Dad has a D15 II.  
It runs and drives, but needs a bunch of little TLC things done to get it back up to nice and reliable condition.
He's of course starting with the basics like changing the oils, new plugs and wires, points, cap, etc..

Radiator needs minor work as it is leaking by the neck.

Needs the wiring at best cleaned up as things have been changed around over the years.  If it doesn't start, wiggling the wires helps,  LOL!   At worst a new wiring harness.  
 Anyone make this?  Steve?

Needs new light for the dash.

Needs a choke rod.  How is this supposed to be?  A knob like a D15? 

Maybe a couple gauges.  Are these supposed to have the hour meter/tach like the D15 have?  It currently has this hole plugged.

Need one hood clip, as one is missing.

Missing the air cleaner cap.

Needs new muffler.

Lights are busted off, so need a couple of them eventually.  Are these the same as on a series 1 D15?
Should there be a rear light?

It currently only has one hydraulic lever to move the blade up and down.  The other two directions you have to adjust the bade pins by hand.  Looking around online I see some were set up with these other adjustments controlled by hydraulic cylinders as well.  
(one spool, two spool and three spool are the options I believe?)
Is this something that can be easily changed in the future?  If so, anyone part out a machine and have the cylinders and whatnot to upgrade his?

I'm sure I'll have a ton more questions he'll want answers for as he tares into it more.  If the weather holds out like it has been he hops to get it fixed to be reliable so he can use it to move snow this winter.

I'll add pics when I get some.

Steiner likely will have most of the motor parts.  Shoup has a pretty good muffler, fer about $50.  You can use a universal lawn mower choke cable, thread it through the center hole of the dash panel. Hour meters are available, but the drive parts, at the dist end are getting rare.  Hood latches are available, I think MSC, or McMaster-Carr should have them.Most all the stuff that fits a D-15 I should transfer right over.  Its the undercarriage parts, chains, rollers, rails, idlers that are getting rare.

Here are a few pics as promised.




Today Dad and Grandpa scraped many 5 gal pails of dirt and crud off of the machine so they could see what they had to work with, LOL!

Dad discovered that the top roller on one side must be stuck and has been for some time as he says it is worn flat.  So might be needing one of them too.  

We need a pressure washer.... Guess I know what to ask for come Christmas time huh? Wink

We'll have to look into those parts, thanks!

Yeah, we think so too!  I'm sure it will be a lot of work to get it up to snuff, but what project isn't?  And this one is DAD'S so I don't have to pay the bills, HEHEHEHE!  ;)

Should make it fun to work on something that I don't have to pay for.  I'll have to find parts, as Dad don't really do the computer thing much, but that's ok.
  
We figure it will be more handy than the HD5 we have that never gets used since we finished building the cabin.  It's just too big and too much hassle to fire it up to use for a bit, etc.... Where this H3 is gas so even in the winter we can fire it right up easy like the tractor and use it to push show etc...
Should work better than the back blade on the D15 II too!  Less looking backwards and stiff necks.  
It is obviously much smaller than the HD5, but we don't need that big of machine anyway for the dinking around we do.

And if we get it all fixed up (and Dad has already mentioned paint, EEEEK!) it is small enough to bring to shows, or even other places to use if the need arises.

Pics look like a low hr machine...  Count the track links and see if they are all there. (one of the most deceiving things that I see done, regularly, is to cut a link out of the chain of a worn out UC).  You should get a manual with specs, it will tell you lots.  Coke, on this site , has prolly forgotten more on the subject, than I'll ever know...Thumbs UpThumbs Up

Thanks Guys,

It is hard to say how wore out this machine is yet, there is a lot of things to look over yet.  It has been repainted at least a couple times.
The hour meter/tach is not in this dash, so no idea how many hours are really on it.  Did all of these come with a tach originally?

We'll have to check out the links, I've never heard about taking out a link, good to know that is something to look out for!

I ordered up an original operators manual, and a dealers parts manual last night from Ebay.  Still looking for an original service manual.  I'm a fan of finding original copy's over reprints where possible.  Often cheaper too!  I don't mind if the cover is smudged and stained, it's what inside that matters right?Wink
