Hey guys and gals,

Thought I'd post my 5 month update on Allis after I brought her back from the dead.  I've now passed the 30 hr mark of service and she is running excellent.  Starts great and runs clean after around 2-3 minutes on a cold start.  I've mainly being using her around the shop moving heavy item and the odd unload of some cargo etc around the complex.  I've been doing used oil analysis on the engine to keep tabs on cleanliness of the Buda and am pleased by the results.  Slowly cleaning up decades of dirt that accumulated from lack of oil changes. She's running like a dream and a real testament to the quality of Allis Chalmers.  Here's some photo's

Your excellent workmanship has paid off! In addition to your good work the F40 size is a very sweet fork lift. I had two in the past that really impressed me and I would be very pleased to have one again.

Thanks Eric, They sure are an excellant machine and the perfect size for my shop.  It makes lifting my Detroit and transmission a breeze.  The Detoit project is coming along well.  I finished making the flywheel housing adapter and fits like a glove.  I just started working on the cranshaft adapter yesterday.  Just doing some final trueing up on my lathe before I start turning out anything.  Excited to get the cranck adapter finished so I can start fitting the engine in the frame and making mounts for it.

Wow... nice work you're doing! What a coincidence to have the tranny bell housing with the numbers "53" to match your Detroit :)

Them welds on your stand were a little cold on the amps - got beads that are standing up and not a lot of penetration - next time use 6011 rod and about 100A

Thanks, was welded up by my father and since he's 6 feet under I can't give him your message.:)  You're right, but I don't have the heart to clean up his welds.:)

Cal the proper way to operate a Detroit is to either slam your hand in the door......... or to smack a thumb with at least a 20 oz. hammer,(keep in mind a glancing blow seems  to work better).............
Also if you can pin the governor to nearly max after a sufficient warming time, it seems to run more efficiently,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, remember it is a supercharged motor,,,,,, and when the rpms drop, so does boost! Drive 'em like you just stole 'em..............
You don't really have to be smart if you know who is!

Lol, every video I see on a Detroit I always asked them if they slammed their door on their hand first.:)  Some get it and some do not:).  Here's a gal that clearly gets it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tas59JfTrt4

we have 2 detroits on the farm now and they give absolutely no trouble.  neighbors love them have several trucks, tractors and even a Gleaner G with one. I can hear him anytime he moves the trucks as they are straight piped, and usually know they are coming 3-4 miles away LOL

Our neighbor has an Oliver 1950 with a Jimmy in it with straight pipe. You can hear him from a mile away. Great sound.

When I was a kid my dad ran a logging company with a  12V71 powered Hayes HDX with a Husky loader on it and 2 4-53 powered Timber Jacks.  I spent many many hours sitting in that Hayes with the window down and listening to the music.  I think that's what got me thinking about swapping in a 4-53T to a modern truck.  A side by side comparison with my straight piped Cummins 6BT is about 85 decibels at idle and 97 full throttle no load.  The 4-53T is 95 decibels at idle and 103 full throttle no load.  I don't think my neighbour are going to be happy.:)

My Dad was a milkman and had 6 route trucks and 2 tractor trailers. I ride with him for years on the semi trailer route. He had a cab over cracker box GMC. It was a real screamer. We would drive with the windows down all year to hear the dual straight pipes sing.

That was true. Used to have to keep an ice scraper in the cab to scrape the ice off the INSIDE of the windshield while driving. In the summer if you were moving the heat wasn't too bad. The stick shift had a 2 speed hi/LP splitter and the tranny was so loose you could "Throw" the gearshift into gear with out the clutch.   Fun to drive.

local excavator company here had them GMC's diesels, they straight piped them and they sounded awesum...well to some anyways. the locals city fathers sent them a letter banning them from driving thru town with them. so now they can't have the fun they used to have! PffffT!

The real truth is you had a Crackerbox with a 238 or a 318 in it and you walked up, open the drivers door, place hand in opening then slam the door THREE TIMES to assure you were angry enough to slam that shifter and mash that throttle!!

Was told that in 1975 by an old geezer as I am now, training me to drive old Freightliners with 8V71 318 Detroit engines.
There is a song to the old two strokers exhaust that many will not ever understand.

Pierson Truck Sales in New Florence MO has a running skid mounted 12V71, have a second unit sitting in the floor next to it, would LOVE to see that in a old 9500 on a thirteen or two stick trans and listen to that song PERSONALLY from the driver seat!!

There was a guy hauling steel that had a V - 12 in a cracker box when I was driving it wasn't painted up just kinda rough looking but sure was a sleeper and someone tried to show off the big engine he would show them how to go down the road.

Thanks, I'll keep the old Allis for at least 30 years if I live that long:)  The shop is a 1200 sqft space I have for personal use for maintaining my vehicles and doing restoration and such.  I have a two post lift,  lathe, welders, and the tools both my own and the ones I inherited from my dad when he past. I guess in a nutshell it's a mechanics, metal, machine, and restoration  shop.:)

Nice set up.

My house came with a 45'x80'pole barn. 6" thick concrete floor, heated, has a stand alone power pole and transformer and barn wired for 440. Never used it but every farmer around want that barn for a shop. ;)
