Purchased a 1966 190XT gas tractor that had been parked for several years so started doing the usual. Drained fuel tank, cleaned settlement bowl, rebuilt carb, points, plugs and so forth. As I got further into the TLC I noticed that it had 2 settlement bowls, one on each side of the tank. Can anyone tell me the reason for this? Does it have a reserve of some type? Thanks in advance....

It was to be sure you could completely empty the tank while working on side hills.

I recently cleaned up and replaced both sediment bowls on my diesel. You need to inspect the needle valve and make sure it allows fuel even after you clean them up. Mine were original and not working correctly. I also had to redo the lines.
To your question though, I don't know for sure, but I think it has to do with being on a hill sideways. If the tank was low on fuel, it would run out of fuel depending upon which side it was leaning. Of course, if one side got clogged, the other side would help too. Maybe under heavy load, it needs plenty of fuel too. Not sure we have any of the original designers on this forum but it would be nice to hear from them, if so. |

Like Dr. said. With only one outlet you could end up sucking air if your tank is low on fuel. I think a lot of dozers from that era also used 2 sediment bowls for that reason.

And if you noticed, the left sediment bowl is forward and the right is rearward of the tanks centerline.

I sure did and the left one is a little tuff to clean and change gasket, especially at my age.
