What would allow this machine to move slow in forward but fine in reverse. I have never owned one of these and have no idea how this trans works.

There is a torque converter on engine and then a fwd/ reverse clutch pack behind that . If the clutches are worn or the hydraulic pressure is not enough to apply the proper pressure to the clutch pack it will slip. 
 can be the clutch itself or in the operating pressure of the unit . Service manual time to check the problem and solutions listed.
