Subject pretty much says it all. My '51 WD won't shift into third gear. Shifter is not stuck; it shifts fine into all other gears.

I know I have seen posts on this subject in the past, but I wasn't able to find any in the search.

Suggestions for how to fix?

Thanks!

So, you have 1st, 2nd, 4th, neutral and reverse ?? and it moves or doesn't move in each of those selections??

The shifter never gets stuck in a gear. It shifts fine into and out of all other gears but won't go into 3rd.

What the Dr. Was asking, is if you put the shifter into say 1st gear, engine running, and let out the clutch, does the tractor move?  Does the engine die?  What about reverse?  2nd, 4th???

Worst case you have a gear welded to a shaft, which this test will rule out, or confirm, and then help us guide you through more testing.  Best case, there is something in the shift rail, blocking 3rd.

The tractor drives fine in all other gears.

That's good news!!!

I haven't had one of those trans covers off in a long time, but it sounds like something has come apart in the shift tower, or something dropped into the gear slide area blocking the gear from moving.

Unless other's suggest something else, I think it is time to take the top cover off and see what went wrong.

Also drain the oil, and see screen it, to see if you get any detent balls, set screws, or other items that come out.
