Had a guy today ask me to stop and look at his JD 1010 industral. It will only start with a boost. Will not do anything w/o a boost, not even a clicking noise, nor will it smoke at the battery terminals. Since the problem started he has put a new battery in it, along with having the alternatior checked on it. He says that the oil pressure light comes on still even if he is not giving it a boost. To me it still sounds like a problem with the battery but I am really racking my mind to try and figure this one out. Thanks Steve

I would think, if he clamps to the battery end of the cables to jump it and that works, he either has a bad battery or a bad connection between the battery and the cable clamp. If the battery is not grounded good and he jumps to a different ground point than the battery, this could be the problem.

Have him check cables from battery to the starter, sounds like could be a connection. Could also be the starter going bad, but check the cables first. Put a voltmeter on the battery and see if the voltage falls off while its trying to crank, a starter that draws to much current will do that, then with addtional current from a booster it will crank. Also see how large a battery hes got. it takes a good sized battery to turn it over, if hes using a small car battery that will contribute to the problem. Cant remember what the 1010s had but the larger ones like the 450s had two batteries. Good luck.

on a voltmeter what setting do you use to check the battery. only thing i have ever done w/ a voltmeter is check continuity.

A 1010 should be a 12 volt system, so use like a 20volt scale, a 50 volt scale will work to with a digital meter.

not sure if it would matter, but some of those "new gen" were pos ground/ 24v

No, Larry, some of the new generation JD were NOT 24 volt positive ground. The last few years of 2 cylinder diesels and the '10 and '20 series new generation diesels WERE 24 volts but center ground. They had a 12 volt battery with positive ground and another with negative ground. The starter and generator were not grounded and worked at 24 volts. Lamps and accessories had to be evenly divided between the positive and negative 12 volt circuits to keep the batteries charged evenly.
I don't know the 1010 diesel was 12 or 24 volts, probably 12 volts. And probably positive ground, like my early 4020 gas. But the 1010 was built at Dubuque while the 3010 and 4020 were built at Waterloo with different designers. While it is possible, positive ground alternators have been rare and unusual.
The 24 volt middle grounded system does confuse many with marginal electrical skills.

Alot of the Deeres had a low oil pressure shutdown, if the 1010 is so equipped, that might be part of the problem?
