In the parts book I have for the tractor the muffler is correct and as you saw was on it back in the day. The heat shield and lower exhaust was all in one piece and seems to be original too, although I will post a photo of that part which shows the exhaust stack part has been replaced at some point.

That's interesting. thanks, that's one neat A.

A bit of an update on the Model A, after getting the tractor running a few issues have been identified which have all of a sudden snowballed into a full restoration.
First task was the radiator which was completely blocked as it turned out so it has been removed and pulled apart to get a new Core made. Whilst off the top and bottom tanks have been sandblasted along with the side panels to get rid of the multiple layers of old paint and the barnacles from the inside.

Next step was to remove the rear floor and mudguards to get in and clean everything up and sort out some small fluid leaks.
We found the underside of the floor still had some original paint hanging in there too;

Hey, that's a familiar story!!, that's how mine ended up restored.  Mom just wanted to hear it run again. To do that required,,,, and to do that required ,,,, and to do that means I had to do,,,,  Ended up completely apart .

That intake manifold is a curiosity. Obviously was for low grade fuel but different than mine which is also a low grade fuel tractor.

A big shout out to Norm Meinert for his excellent service, I ordered some items from him for my Model A Restoration less than two weeks ago and they arrived here in Australia today! I am stunned that I can get items from the US quicker than internal postage in Australia.
I can't thank Norm enough for his service and making parts for the Model A available to restorers.

Thanks TomMN, for flipping that image, This photo has been framed a long time ago and it was only after I posted it on the forum I realised the negative must have been printed in reverse! The belt pulley was the first thing I noticed!

And HD6GTom thanks for the offer SmileI will post some more progress shots soon.

Great story, glad you found the tractor and are restoring it to its glory again. Keep the pictures coming.
Norm is a great guy. He live about 15 mins from me and he can find, make or fix whatever parts you need.
Thanks & God Bless

Great story.  I figured since you guys drive on the wrong side of the road, tractors were backward too! LOL.  Now we see where the 34 Airflow name came from, cool old car, well before it's time.  My dad had one in the 40's, didn't even have a picture of it.

Ha Tractor manufacturers are smarter than car manufacturers by putting the steering wheel in the centre!
I will have some updates in the next few days, the cold winter nights have meant I have been a little bit more slack getting into the shed.

So the radiator is almost finished, we just need to run the overflow line and it's ready to go. The new core was made locally and I am very impressed with the way it has come up.

There has only been slow progress in the last couple of months, my work has been very busy leaving little free time to work on the A. However weather is now improving and motivation levels are high so hopefully there will be more updates to this thread.
One job was to remove the front wheels and fit new seals supplied by Norm's and also replace the very worn front wheel bearings. Whilst the rims were removed I sanded those back and put some primer on them ready for painting.

I also removed the manifold and heat shield to clean the surface rust off and repaint.

A little more progress has been made in recent weeks, mainly preparing the sheet metal for new paint, aside from a few small dents the metalwork is all quite good with rust hiding which is a bonus.

We had my 80 year old second cousin visit last week who filled in a lot of the blanks about the tractor, in particular the modifications made for farming such as the large drawbar addition, and also the small fuel can attached to the drivers compartment to allow a full 12 hour day of work. He had driven down 1,400km to see some old friends and cast his eye over the tractor he fondly remembered even though nowadays he is a collector of Green (he currently has 23 JD's). One story he did relay was that in my great uncle Neil had a pet Cockatoo that went everywhere with him, riding on his bike handlebars and on the fender of the tractor, except in the Winter when he sat up next to the Exhaust pipe to stay warm. After looking at the photos taken back in the day we noticed the bird in one of the photos as you can see below just in front of the operator!

A little more progress on New Years Day getting rid of layers of paint from the fuel tank. Also found remnants of the original decal underneath, which I'm not sure whether it is intentional but was not centred in the tank, I took measurements so I know where to put the new one but it was an inch1/2 to on side and a 3/4inch higher?

Great story of a family tractor returning home many years later!  Congratulations!  We have some friends currently living in Australia.  Kim is American, John is Australian.  They met in the U.S. while John was working here, moved to Australia, came back to the U.S., and are back in Australia now.  I'll have to ask my wife where they're living.  Mostly keep up with them via e-mail.  Anyway, enjoy the "A" and may you have many good times with it!
