Leaking fitting in FEL hydraulic line?

   I bought a used tractor. Most of the hose connections in the FEL hydraulic system seem to be made with black or galvanized pipe. This is the kind of pipe used for natural gas or water plumbing.  There are 2" nipples, 90 & 45 degree elbows, street elbows, and T fittings.

One of the connections leaks around the threads. I can push it tighter with my pinkie, but when I push the fitting tighter it's just twisting the hose that's attached. The hose untwists itself and loosens up the fitting as soon as I let go of it. 

My questions are this: How do I tighten the connection if there is no kind of swivel in the other side of the hose? Shouldn't the hydraulic system have some better fittings than can be found in the plumbing section of a hardware store? Should I replace some of the fittings with a swivel kind of connection?

	That connection looks like a swivel fitting. If you are going to replace fittings, schedule 80 would be better. Some heavy duty fittings are available from Parker dealers but cost more.I have schedule 40 fittings on my 45 and they didn't break when the hydraulic pump didn't bypass till over 9,500 LBS. Yea that's right, I had a 10,000 lbs gauge on it when it happened cause I blew out a 5000lbs gauge. Needless to say my Traction Booster gauge no longer works. If there is no swivel on either end of the hose, replace it with one that has a swivel. Disassemble any leaking joints and reassemble with a good pipe dope. Teflon tape is not a good sealer for hydraulics because it can get into and mess up plungers in the system.

	Use SC 80 fittings as the normal pipe fittings you get at most places are Sc 40 and good for 125 PSI MAX. many farm stores have machined hyd fittings, swivel connectors and such at a diecent price. Otherwise get X heavy or XX heavy fittings and if you use teflon tape the trick is to allow at least 1 1/2 threads to show below where you start the tape onto threads. Do not back off fitting once it is tight with tape as it may leak. that fitting looks like a swivel fitting but some use a internal seal and that can leak, others use 2 fittings to make flex joint with a flare on each end to seal.
