I am wondering if this is the same "Growers" liquid fertilizer that my Dad and me tried 30 years ago when I was a kid. It came out of the States. I forget the analysis of the product (we still have an empty drum around with the figures on it) but I do know that we sprayed it on a soybean crop. We split a field and the side that was treated with "Growers solution" definately grew higher. I can't recall if there was any difference in pod size or overall yield. I do remember the company literature making some pretty bold claims on improving soil health. Even then, as a young ag student, these claims struck me as being "ambitious". For whatever reason, we never did use the product again.

Is this the company you are asking about?
I just spent some time reading through their web site. The one thing that you will notice is that there is a lack of independant third party research. In practice you are seed and foliar applying a reduced amount of nutrients. This is all well and good if you have good soil fertility to begin with. The amount of nutrients in a bushel of grain or forage is a given quantity. It doesn't come from the air, it comes from the soil and any additional amendments that the grower supplies. From practical experience with growers that have used a product like this the initial results are good for a few years and then yields begin a decline when only this program is followed. Additional amendments are needed to maintain crop yields for the long term. What you are getting is a premium product at a premium price. Whenever the cost of fertilizer gets high like it is now these products are dusted off and find new favor. When production costs get to be more in line with crop value they disappear only to be dusted off when economics get out of balance again. There is very little sound science behind their claims and most of results are antecdotal. It's nice to see pictures of healthy growing crops, but I can show you a handful of seed catalogs with nice glossy photos of beautiful growing crops. The reality is that few of our fields will ever look like the ones in the pictures and when they do someone will be there to take pictures. Edited by John (C-IL) - 11 Apr 2012 at 8:07am |

Growers out of Milan Ohio? Dad was huge on them waaaay back when I was young. The corn planter was fitted with tubes to place a bit in the seed trench, I think it was called "pop up"? application and they would fly it on the soybeans when in bloom. I see their blue green trucks around every spring.

just like john said, good to apply when you need a boost on real good ground. Tried it on hay the why they wanted, apply 3-18-18-5 in early spring (feb), then apply 18-9-9-5 mid april. lost a lot of hay that year. the field beside it i just spread 20-10-10 at 200lb/acre in march and after 1st cutting (mid may) and 10-26-26 after last cutting. NO COMPARISION........SNAKE OIL
