 Topic: Power Steering for 'D' grader?

We just picked up a 'BEHLEN' power steering unit from a D grader for another D grader.
I have seen one other D grader with Behlen power steering but the parts book shows a different unit. Was Behlen power steering a factory installed unit or was it aftermarket?
I'd appreciate any pictures of power steering units on a D grader. These have all been 1966-7 square frame D Special graders that also have all the other options.

well i know nothing of the D grader but i thought i read in Norms book that only the larger graders had factory power steering at that time. I may be thinking of the mid 50's not the mid 60's. however, if it shows up in the parts book maby it was a factory option.

I have a parts book for s/n's 5425 and up (round frame) and they do not show any power steering in their options. Power steering may have been introduced when they came out with the square frame. Literature that I have says that they went to hydrostatic steering for the M65's. I have seen two of the older machines that have adapted some type of power steering. One machine went fully hydrostatic and the other machine took a steering box with power steering from a pickup truck and adapted it to his grader. The first one used the grader's hydraulic system and the second one added a separate hydraulic pump. I have added power assist from a sp combine to mine and used a separate power steering pump. I can now steer mine with one finger. I should try and post some pictures.

Just checked my Aug 1967 'D' grader brochure and on the cover and inside on the options page is a Behlen power steering unit. Mystery solved. Behlen was an OEM supplier to Allis and these were a factory installed option.

Behlens were built in Columbus Nebraska. Business is still going but now they make steel panels and buildings. Behlen was quite the inventor as he also made Behlen ear corn cribs. We have a Behlen power steering on our D grader as well as on an international H.

The Char-Lyn power steering torque generator provides a very simple retrofit method; remove a small length (approx 8") of steering wheel shaft, install the torque generator and run supply and return hydraulic hoses to pump. No cylinders and no hoses to cylinders. Works great on our D-14. At least one of the suppliers that support this site offer Char-Lyn products. Herb(GA)
