Day off Today, back to work tomorrow.  Did get the seeping fuel tank off and to a weld/Fab shop for Strapping and small patches to repair it.  $650 to fix, or $1200 to replace the tank with Like Kind or $900+ to install just a Fuel Tank, this one is split 50/50 Fuel/Hydraulic.  Still have a PTO on the truck, just lacks a Pump and piping.

Sanded the Grinding work and dings Grits: 180, 320, 600, 1000 then ran over the entire tank with a Buffer.  All back Installed.

Getting down to masking sanding and priming stage. Get a day off as to rains or associated issues unable to work at yard and is a considered Part Time gig so catch up days show up as did yesterday.

Hope to be ready to prime it out tomorrow.

Today's results, cab is Masked, the inner rocker attachment welds have been ground down, bottom of cab floor scraped off where will be applying Epoxy Primer tomorrow.  Have my over spray curtains back up, have some sanding on doors, the fenders and 'Shiny' spots on cab to where can apply self etch primer on those.

Providing all looks good after priming, will be ordering paint, returning to the original JM Code Toreador Red Metallic, no gray under panel this time.

Perhaps I am just becoming more cynical. May end up closing this post out due to that cynicism,

Was looking thru my old history, small
Photo albums with next to no photos in them in comparison to some events we document these days. Built dirt track racing cars in the 70s have three photos, have at most one or two pics of vehicles once had. Family memorabilia albums are photos in dozens for years not hundreds where can honestly state I feel I impress too much of our life here onto others that can likely care less.

Old truck is in prime now, paint is ordered and should be here next week. Closing on completion.

interesting about the 50/50 tank !
I wonder if anyone's ever put the wrong juice in the wrong side of the tank ???
Or worse... the 'baffle' between the two sides  leaks a bit ?

Fill cap is Red, marked Hydraulic only and is Under the bunk while fuel fill is exposed. This style tank has been around a long time where not ever seen one cross leak but is possible.

Alright then, You ALL asked for it!!

Underside and lower region of cab were sprayed with Epoxy Primer to seal the weld areas and to protect the already surface corroding floor pan.  On the roof, all four doors the hood and fenders was recommended I use a Self Etching primer undercoat as the original finish had corrupted so deep and so badly had to nearly strip to bare metal, especially the hood.  Once that had contact dried(about 20 minutes) sprayed a second primer coat of what Shop Line (PPG) calls 2K Heavy Build as it presents a Heavier applied finish for a final sand.  Requires a Sanding prior to paint overlay.    So next step is W/D 500 gr on general areas, a quick dry sand on those areas as Hood and Roof where the material spattered on spray then back to 500 W/D.  ALL these primers are urethane Epoxy two part and a Bear to get applied before starts setting up.  I was only mixing 18-20oz and shooting from a 24oz DeKups system on my HVLP gun.

In places on the Floor pan to Cab Pillar rocker and outer rocker with cross members are four panels welded into the assembly.

Fenders are like handling tinfoil, the doors are clumsy and tough to deal with on horses but was only choice for me.  One damn rear door slipped on the horses and hit the floor with a corner where had to stop, straighten that corner up and yesterday sanded then filled that spot, made me so very unhappy!!!  When ordered paint also ordered additional 2K primer so can touch up that and a few other 'Spots'.  ALL the panels on the truck seem 'Soft' and 'tender' as to slight impact dent-able.

Soon as painted, and sealed then assembled will be building 3.25" thick Standoffs for the new bed to reside on.  That dimension is based on the thickness of the Filler tubing for the fuel tank and the OE distance from Frame to Floor of original bed as to Clearance should ever need to remove that tank again.  3" square heavy wall pipe with 1/4" spacers welded to them to rest on the frame, will have aligning pins to seat in the already present frame holes.

On the masking, is a reason not too obvious why a wide tape zone in door ways.  Upper is attached to the door seal lip, Lower zone is actually ballooned into the cab so could primer the floor pan to rocker panels areas inside as well out.

Door got sufficiently fixed, all primer has been completed and sanded with 500gr to remove heavy high spots and roughness.  Doors will be first up to paint Inside area, then move around to fenders and hood then cab.  The paint should tack up well enough quickly enough to receive that first dusting coat then a fairly wet coat followed with another wet coat as the paint coats get to an almost dry condition.  Clear will then be applied to the Inside of the doors and the remaining components, another three coats minimum.  Once that sufficiently dried or cured will flip the doors, cover the other parts or as with fenders move them elsewhere, and paint the outer skins of the doors three more coats and three clear.
Paint is a 1:1 with reducer, is a Shopline base with the colorant, uses Shopline reducer, three quarts in the gallon can full can reducer, PPG basic products.  The Clear is as recommended by the body shop the Clear I had left from the KW, Full can with a can of Hardener at 2:1 then add for a 24oz cup a little more than 2oz reducer, will use hardly any of that gallon of reducer.

The two small cans to the right are additional Epoxy High Fill primer I have NOT used, will likely get used on my trailers once start repaints of those for nose steel rock chips.

Ordered an additional 1/2 Gal pain and another reducer can, paint is semi translucent so after Four coats on the doors and cab rear pillars/back wall still get a Hint of Under Coats.  Is like painting with Gatorade as gets thicker color wise but still semi clear.
Altogether not doing bad, once paint arrives will scuff and add coat to all four doors, Cab Roof and Hood.  Had a Sweat Monster roll down sleeve of Coveralls and onto L Fender, that will require a sand out then repaint.

So Far:

Has a "Denim" look to it where luster will not happen until clear applied.

Had issues with what I thought was Bad Paint or poor mix, turns out the ONLY person that knew was a rep from PPG that is about to retire at 45 years, this paint necessitated a RED Solid BASE Coat when Ford introduced the color.  It WILL cover but only after at least five full coats over any other color sealant base coat.  I used a dark gray, he stated even with Black would have ended up with more coats, should have used RED.

This was Three Coated Roof this morning.  Two coats per the rep will cover the bleed thru.  Dark Spot is just lighting.

All you other fellas that paint yourself, store this away, those Translucent Reds, Blues, Greens paints all require a SOLID Base Coat, albeit Red Blue Green or even Black.  Gray will function really well for Silver!!

Got paint under control, FINALLY.

So then Clear went on

A few Tired Runs as was pushing this last night.  Also had SEVERAL Insects decide to commit Paint Suicide where had to fix those today, yet had flipped doors to seal the inner skins where needed it.
Moth

Repair

Doors

Still have the Solvent Popped fender to redo, that will wait until these have cured up some and get situated ON the Truck where can control the Floorspace better.  Also get the chance to clear off the existing Mask Sheeting and clean up the bay before start on that and cover up the ENTIRE pickup.

There is a Sad point.  bought my Used doors as New shells became NLA, the bad part is I managed to get them at $600/pair, today that has jumped to $1200 as Availability disappears.  Only so many of these still out there in decent shape.

Ambitious day, up at 4:45 so readied before sun up, was on it by 7.  Cut and Buff begun, Hood is about as Good as I need, cleaned up cab roof and L Pillar, 1/2 of Right Pillar, worked on L H Doors and hung those then set the hood.  All aligning so far so good.

Found Left lower corner a tad "Thin", gonna remain as such. Did decide Both front fenders turned out Nasty, going to sand both back, reprime the Left and then repaint Both.

Got the right front door on, may need some changes to that hang, spot touched up a few nicks and dings from handling while readying to get after the fenders. Last door is all but done on buffing just ran out of steam today. Headliner and several smaller pieces reinstalled, be worki g on Door latches for L side next along with trial fit of floor covering. Get more room in the other side of shop and will clean the seats for reinstall.

Crappy day.
Start redo on fenders get the left one cleaned up and sprayed with a 2K primer sealer, moved to slight issues on right one sand out and reseal. Sand and mask rt corner then clean gun of primer materials hour later mix a load of paint , right fender Seemed OK left threw up almost immediately, check corner same issue paint lifting. Shut it all down, angry went out to mow., got half yard done and rider died, crank starts and immediately dies, start trouble shoot, have to disassemble damn console area, relays and connections all back there and rain moving in.
Get a instant spike on key on then nothing, no constant on and no pull in power, bypass and run up to shop, shut down solenoid released magic smoke.

Get my numbers to call deere tomorrow. Neighbor is out mowing grab two Stags go next door, he is dealing with a Momma and one Kit skunk has them flooded out of den under porch. Back to house get .22, back to neighbors, momma abandoned kit, will not leave, kit dies., neighbor hauls to ditch, finish beer come home.

Then rain arrives, finally day ends with a rainbow

PC line is down, phone cam will not resize

A little research on PPG site, looks as a combo of issues on paint, too cool out at 67 degrees, reducer I have is not fast enough, becomes aggressive to undercoats. Also mixes heavy at 1:1 with paint where had already decreased to 2:1 and will have to discuss with supplier if need go to 3 or 4:1 after prep it all back up, again.

Paint, without a booth is anyone’s guess what can go south.
