    Posted: 06 Feb 2017 at 5:30pm
I have a Tecumseh 8HP engine on and Allis Chalmers snow blower.  It ran when I got it.  Needed a fuel primer line installed, so finally after a couple years got around to it.  Now I have no spark.  I took the flywheel off and made sure the magnets were clean.  Points look good and gapped to 0.020".  I though it might be the condenser, installed a new one, still nothing.  I thought it might have a bad on/off switch so bypassed that and nothing.  Is there a way to test the coil?  Also how do you set the gap between the magnets on the flywheel and the coil?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Aaron(IN)

The gap is an easy on..
put any business card between the flywheel and coil ! It's close enough to get you spark.
disconnect the 'grounding' or 'kill' wire from the points, then spin with plug sitting on the head, you should get a spark.
Try a NEW sparkplug ! I've seen plugs that 'looked' OK but were bad, They get fouled and short themselves out.

I have a 8 hp TEC and the shop I go to said these are a little tougher to set. I did get mine reset and have spark and it runs. Cant remember the moves to get it done, cause I am getting old!:) Good luck with the TEC engine. I hate to say but they are not my favorite. The Kohlers are much easier to work on in my opinion.
And yes check that new plug.

If it ran fine before, the points probably are oxidized over. A little tv tuner cleaner or Brakekleen will clean off any oxidation on the contacts to give you the spark back...

like steve said probley just clean the points or use a points file , pionts gap =.020    coil air gap= .010 to .014  spark plug = .030    i use a long feeler gauge place between the coil and magnets on the flywheel and let the magnets pull the coil down then tighten the screws, roll the flywheel and feeler gauge out

I did not try a new/different plug.  Will try that this weekend as the snow blower is at Dad's shop.  It is not the points they looked brand new, but did clean them with fine emery cloth.  I re-gapped them to 0.020" after cleaning them and nothing.  The coil is mounted on the inside of the flywheel that is why I was asking how to set the gap.  All the other small engines I have messed with have had the coil on the out side.

While you're 'turning wrenches', do  a compression test. ANything less than 90#s and she's 'weak'....probably will need valves and rings...
Someone sells a 'no-more-points' device for them old engines, about $20, might be worth the investment if you use the machine a lot. Having to pull flywheel off even once a year for 'no spark' is 1 time too many for me nowadays.
