Both were used. Early models had the 149, later models had the 160.  If it has an oil bath air cleaner, chances are it's a 149.  The model and serial number is stamped on a flat surface close to the exhaust manifold near the back of the engine.

I'm not disputing your findings but sometimes you have to wire brush and/or use a sandpaper in order to get all the digits showing...

If those are all the digits you have, you will likely have to pull the head to get the cubic inch or else ordering parts would be a leap in the dark. I have two D14's with the same looking block as you have and the row of digits start with "149" and a group of five numbers plus R at the end which has to do with compression ratio apparently. It's maybe more likely that you have a 149, however, you're really lucky if you have a 160...more sought after but way more for parts cost.

Probably 3 since it is a H3 with the serial.

Could be looking at a 5 possibly which could have a 1 in front of it.

I checked the dealers parts book and H-3's serial # 6959 and lower had the 149 engine.
Serial 6959 and higher had the 160 engine. Serial number on the left side of the torque tube where the engine bolts to the torque tube.
Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed

Due to serial number, its a 149. It probabaly has an H in front of the 3, if it came out of a dozer.

Are you sure there is not a fuel pump. Never seen a gas motor with out one originally. Could it be the fuel pump went bad and removed and a plate put over it and they just used the pressure from the fuel tank. Just curious I guess.  norm
