A year or so ago, there was a thread showing thumb screws that were used to hold the grill in place on a d17. Enabled removal and quick access to the power steering fluid fill. Anyone know what size those are or what's used? Thinking stainless steel is the best

I think it should be 5/16 dia. Coarse threaded? Just try a bolt that size in the treaded hole and see if it works. I believe the early D series used different style head on the thumb screw than the later models. One was fancier. You can get them on ebay or most aftermarket dealers but they get a little pricey. I think my local ACE hardware store carries the plain standard kind for about a $1.50 or so a piece.

All the D series tractors that we have, have wing nuts. The D-15 that I drove home new from the dealer in 1962 had wing nuts to hold the grill. I bought a large bag of them at Fastenel for a small amount of money.

Thanks all. Tractor is down at the Farm and 100 miles away so was trying to nail this down so I can deal with it next trip. And, like Sherman Farms, I may need wing nuts instead (thinking there might be nuts on there now)
JoeM thanks for that chart. It's the spade head stainless that I was thinking of. Gary, thanks for the parts no. I'll give it some study. Scott

My D-17 (Ser. II) has 2 wing nuts on the top and 2 wing bolts on the bottom.
i just looked in my parts manual and that is what is listed there as well. I believe I replaced the wingnuts years ago so they may not look original. The wing (or spade) bolts may be original but I can't say for sure. In any event, the bolt and nut sizes are both 5/16" NC. |

These are the factor style thumb screws.
The wing nuts should be the flanged ones.
