 Topic: Any tricks to remove a freeze plug?

Have a one inch freeze plug on side of my engine block of my Ferguson that is seeping and I want to replace it. Any tricks to remove it? Just have fear that I will knock in into the water jacket to never be seen again.

Once you knock it into the water jacket just grab the lip with channel locks and pull it out. It won't go far the area inside the water jacket is not that big.

pierce with an ice pick, insert a screw then pull with a prybar, claw hammer , or whatever.

It won't go anywhere.
It will turn sideways and grab it with pliers and pull it out.

Everyone was correct and it's out! THANKS! I drilled a small hole and inserted a sheet metal screw and then grabbed it with vice grips. I was able to bow it out before the screw pulled out. Repeated with a larger screw and bowed it out more before it also pulled out. Then I took a screwdriver and hammer and pushed one side inwards which pushed out the other side. I grabbed it with plyers and out it came. A little nerve racking as there was plenty of room for it to drop to the bottom but it stayed in the hole and just spun sideways so I could grab it. Now to order a couple of 1 inch plugs. I know I'll just need one but my luck always seems to not be with me if I just get one. LOL

Any time I need to be certain a screw will hold in thin metal I punch the hole with a pick as it rolls the metal and gives a much better grip than a drilled hole. Anyway glad you accomplished the task. Take the rest of the day off.

on the B head they came out easy becuase they were rusted up bad. Poked an old srewdriver thru and they pried right out. Bad deal was I had just had the head redone at a machine shop and the guy did not replace them.

Two types of plugs , one is cup type and other is the disc type are used in different engines . One just fills a straight hole and other has a machined stop in the casting . Removal of each and instillation of each differ.

Make sure to use a good sealant on the new plug, like Permatex #1A
