put together allis motor 226 with alternator from 236 diesel,  everything is coming together fine. red light works when key is turned on, goes out when oil pressure is increasing.  alternator is putting out 14 volts. fuel gauge is working properly. temperature gauge working, increasing when motor is warming up. tach is running around 1,000 on low idle, but it buries the needle at half throttle. parts book shows 2 different tachs, 1 for gas and 1 for diesel. we know the tach is original for the dash, it is a gasoline engine tach. what thoughts are out there on how possibly to fix the problem? we want the tractor to operate as close to new as my nephew will have his wife driving the square baler while he is loading the wagon.

If the rear of the alternator drives the tachometer, I thought there was different size gears in there for different applications

Check the drive gears on the alternator and count the teeth for starters...big gear should be 46 if I remember correctly...some people have accidentally put 43 tooth gears in them and the tach reads faster.
