    Posted: 17 Mar 2017 at 12:05pm
A friend of mine is giving me his HD7G for cheap.  He's up in his 80's and his wife is bugging him to get rid of all of his equipment and finally hang it up. SOooo. I'm buying his HD7G and it needs a transmission oil pump.  He stripped it about 2 years ago.  He says the tractor runs fine but needs this part fixed. He says he didn't let it warm up enough before running it and that is how it happened.

I'm totally new at this and I'm new at the forum so I can learn.

Here is the part I need. I emailed member "DoctorCorey" as it appears he has the same HD7G loader that I have. According to his profile, he hasn't posted on this forum since 2015.

Here are the pics of what I need.  Notice the stripped splines on the pump.

If anyone has any advice for a new HD7G owner, I'm all ears. I do have the original 2 volume HD7G service manual by Jensales.

What is the brand of pump or pump manufacturer?

:) pictures taken when the Mrs was not looking. Removed quickly. ;)

Orange, the pump is a stock original from the 7g.

Anyone have a list of checks before I load her up and bring her home?

AH - So no tag on the pump -  If no tag - take the shaft and coupling to a machinist - pretty simple job to make a new one.

Say there American Homestead. I thinks you better keep hanging out on here for years to come. It could be a lot of fun. I don't have any insight for you on your 7, but I bet it'll be a lot of fun. If'n you know how to put pictures on here, we'd love to see some. Thanks, Darrel

Yeah, one guy on facebook told me that 12 spine shafts and couplings are like gold.  And after doing some research, he's right. I can't find 12 spline ANYTHING.  9 spline, 13 spline, 14 spline yes, but not 12.

The tricky part is these shafts and couplings are hardened to take extreme pressures and just milling a piece of steel won't work. It needs to be properly heated and quenched to harden the metal.

I'm looking forward to putting this monster to work but I'm so worried about breaking things as old as it is and having a money pit. Cry  Life is an adventure!

On another note, what would cause the stipping here on the pump?  The former owner told me it's because he didn't let the 7G warm up 20 minutes before operation.  But I have seen videos on youtube where people fire up their 7G and drive off no problem.

Could there be another issue I need to check for?

I think I'd be takin a look inside the pump before I spent any money on it.
When I was still workin, we repaired all kinds of equipment like that in the shop. Shafts can be welded up and recut and if the right process is followed, it can last a long time without "heat treat and quinching." There are work hardening materials out there too, kinda tough to machine sometimes, but a good shop will tell you if they can do it right.

Your pump must be a CESSNA PUMP  and the shaft parts number should be70628246 and you better check your inside pump before order a shaft.

Cessna pump - if looking inside the pump check for a wear plate.  A spec book for the pump would provide much needed information on specs. flow capacity in GPM and pressure requirement.  Might also find some specs in a AC 7G service manual.

Correction on the pump, is now a EATON Cessna, I had to order the nose housing as is broken on yours and get the seal package as mine was sucking air so bad. I have a donor tractor I pulled the engine/converter assembly out of, they had welded the shaft at the converter end gear. These are my 'Good ones' still in use which I believe are 14 spline, going to take to a Detroit diesel dealer and see if can match to a blower drive as it appears similar save the pump end collar. The other option is to convert the entire mess, pump, drive gear and couplers to something else.

The reason I say convert is that Minnpar can build a order for these but will have excess cost to have made, that cost is passed on where I was quoted over three hundred for just the shaft WHEN made available.

The former owner said he took it to a few fab shops and they didn't want to mess with it.   I have a different pump squared away and probably a coupler too.  I just want to be sure of the cause of the stripping before I just throw it on there and assume all is well with everything else.

By all of the rust it may have not been receiving enough lube from the converter or not assembled with the correct lube. There is a vent line from that housing cover for the drive gear that sends any vented gasses and fluid to the trans/final case as I remember. Mine has the hose early units had just a vent.

Hub City makes splined shafts and couplings. A bearing dealer should be able to help. I do not think they make a 12 spline. I did have them make a special coupling for me but that was years ago.

Are you sure it is 12 spline. You should look for a new pump. The pump mounting should be a standard. The capacity (GPM) can be determined by the width of the gears. I think it is a gear pump but not certain.

It is a gear pump, two section taking suction from both the trans sump and the left hand side strainer. Is a Eaton Cessna and according to the hydraulics shop I use very much still available. Big issue will be the shaft and the couplers. The gear that drives from the converter is splined for this shaft not adapted. Would require a lot more to get it replaced that the pump.

So my issue now is finding a shaft and coupler.  I got the pump on the way from Corey (thank goodness) but now I need to find the shaft and coupler.  I have the stripped ones but who do I send it to so that I can have a new one fabbed?

Find a local machine shop that does prototype(small job) work. The majority can cut splines this small and work with better harder materials. Most will have access to other companies that produce spline shafting or couplers as well.

Also as I noted above look for a major hydraulic repair shop close by. Mine is 40 miles away. If they can locate materials they will attempt to purchase or build what is needed.

Need to ask, was the ear of the mount already broken or loos? If it was that will allow the pump to shift under load and do as shown. There is no tag for these pumps, the part numbers are right in front of you on the mounting flange. Eaton Cessna numbers.

Just as  a future reference for your associated hydraulics shops, these are EATON 26507-RBM , Series S-26 hydraulic pumps.  Per my supplier for hydraulic parts he SHOULD be able to get these but would be in either 9 or 13 spline, then would have to modify or convert the drive gear in the converter(small side cover) to one of these and use available shafts.

I bought a dish washer at a auction one time for 10 bucks to put in my shop for washing chainsaw parts worked like a charm when my wife saw it she said I better not ever catch any parts in my dishwasher. but what she don't know I have used her oven for heating chainsaw crankcases in to replace the crank bearings lol
