I didn't need another project but.... sheetmetal isn't too bad, recent clutch job. Shifts nice, brakes ok. Hydraulics and pto work fine.

Now the problem. Hard stater but I haven't checked to see if the glow plugs are working. Good smoke out of the exhaust when cranking. I think the rings are gone or stuck. It smokes a bit but what I don't like is when I pull the dipstick when running I get a pretty good amout of smoke there. The only ring set I have run accross is $800 for rings, rod bearings and gaskets. This is a Toyosha 2.3 3 clinder diesel. Anyone have any parts sources or advise?

There is a parts source in Texas  but I'm sorry I can't give you a name. It has been many years since I overhauled one. The 5020, 5030 AND 6140 pistons and rings are all the same as I recall.

Might be just as easy to find a good running engine instead. Didn't Massey use that engine in a couple machines? I could be wrong.
Can't fix stupid

Spent a bunch of time searching the Internet and found two other parts sources today. So parts wise I am good. I started the tractor today and it actually didn't start to bad. Fresh oil and running it might have helped. I want to work it hard before I decide what to do but first I have to change the waterpump. It's got a ton of scary play in it.

one always had to use the glow plugs on initial start up.   If you pulled the dipstick while running you should have gotten blowby and an oil bath...
does it have hydrostatic steering or assist ps... i.e. a cross cylinder or a swivel mounted on top or the lh front axle. ?

When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money..

No oil bath, just vapor. The steering has the pivot mounted on top of the axle. Nice beefy setup.I am waiting for my manuals to show up but right now I am letting the glow plug heat up for 30 seconds?

There are a boatload of used parts on ebay right now.  Somebody appears to have parted out an entire pair of 6140 tractors.  Some of the prices seem great, others seem a bit high, but I would jump on them if I needed them.
Still in use:

I saw that, thanks. My water pump should be here Friday so after that is fixed I am going to drive this thing a bit and decide what to do. I think I can get rings, bearings, seals and gaskets for about $700. Then head work. I am waiting for my shop manual. Anyone know if this is a drop pan/pull head repair or does the tractor have to be split?

AJ a friend of mine has a three cylinder Massey and it has a Perkins in it. In fact he just overhauled it.

This has a Toyosha engine from Japan. Out of business now. The tractor was made by Hinimoto for Allis. Massey did use the same engine in a few models. TBN has a nice Grey Market forum and the Toyosha engine and tractor are well thought of from what I read.

My water pump came in yesterday so I may be able to get that done this weekend.
