    Posted: 16 Apr 2016 at 6:17pm
Well, I've got another project.  This time I have a CA.  Bought 2 to make one.  My idea on this paint job is as unusual as my C, Maggie, and B, Haney.  The metal is in pretty good condition and you can still barely see the original decals.  So, I'm knocking all the rust down and clear coating it.  She's earned all these dents and scratches.  Why not show them off.  Got the engine pulled--it ran like a champ and appears to have been rebuilt recently.  Sometimes you get lucky.  I've cleared the fenders, battery box, and gas tank.  The tank, unfortunately, was swiss cheese, so I had to use a different tank.  Paint color is a bit different.  Oh well.

What is the deal with CA's and backwards rear tires? My CA has backwards rears to. Good luck on your project. I like them when they stay in their work clothes.

I would not call it a restoration since there is no actual restoring being done (no stripping, repainting, new wiring, or repairing/replacing worn items).  I don't know what you would call it ...  Perhaps a "preservation" or "project", but not a restoration.

I perhaps failed to mention that all the mechanicals will be replaced/restored.  It's not just an odd paint job.  That's why I'm tearing it down completely.  Restoration is an abused term anyway.  Painting an old tractor is not restoration--as many have noted on this site.

The true meaning of restoration is to bring something back to brand new, not just mechanically, but cosmetically (as it left the factory).  Since you know it is an abused term, you should not be using it in your case.

Pardon my rant.

Hub I bought a tractor once that had been sitting in an open hay shed and the birds had pooped on the hood long enough that there was about a 2" pile in the middle of the hood. I thought about clear coating over the whole mess but one thing led to another and before long the whole tractor was all cleaned and painted.   Good for you thinking "outside the box"   I like it!!    Mark

Hub - I for one have enjoyed the artistic liberties you have taken with your previous builds. They are functional and fun. I followed a more traditional path when I did my CA probably because I don't have your imagination. I called mine a restoration cause I can. Call yours whatever you want cause you can. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Mark, Hervey,
Thanks gents.  If you take a risk and post stuff and pictures on the interweb, someone is bound to be offended by what you say or show.  That, is not my intention.  I just like showing what I've done and I really like these Allis Chalmers.  I appreciate the comments AND criticism.

Sorry guys but Dseries4's comment about the definition of the word restoration is WRONG!!! Everybody has there own definition of restoring a tractor. You have to start somewhere, I have a ton of tractors "partially restored". I define restored as bringing it back from a fence row hulk. So what if it isn't painted show room quality and cant comb my hair in the paint work, frankly I think its pretty sad how someone can chew someone out because they referred to fixing up a tractor as restoring!!

Sorry for the rant guys just had to get that off my chest!

What's really important here is --- Hub, how many hours do you average a week keeping your garage/shop so clean you can eat off the floor?

Hervey,
I spend more time on the tractors than the shop.  However, to give you an example of my anal retentive nature, I lost a 9/16 box end wrench while working on the tractors over the weekend.  Holy moly!  Everything had to stop until I found that wrench.  Never found it and I'm losing sleep over it!  Dang!

WD45Diesel57, I like your definition.

Here are some of the tin parts with the dents beaten out, sanded, and clear coated.  Easier than sandblasting, metal fixing, priming and painting.  Big smile

The engine looks recently rebuilt.  The block is painted black and the head yellow.  Maybe that's what was available?  The clutch is brand new and oil pump looks rebuilt too.

Steve,
You sure don't waste any time getting into these tractors! Great documentation and work!
I don't get too hung up on the restoration thing! Mainly because as good as I can do, there will be someone that does it better. And like you I really enjoy the sharing part! Maybe that's why I had to get another project tractor?:) I have been having a lot of fun watching others complete there projects too.
I like the clear coat that your doing over the original condition look. Sound like a lot of the expense may be already done on the engine and clutch. Bonus!

 Chris

Small victories.  Fixed the floor with a washer.  Powerwashed and sanded the tractor.  I was able to clear some of it.  I like the old beat up look.  Today I tackled the hand clutch.  Man, I never want to remove another one of those.  I used an unorthodox approach.  I cut off the splines on a B transmission main shaft.  It fit perfectly into the stub shaft holding the hand clutch.  I held up the final drive with a chain and supported the weight on a block of wood.  I supported the base of the brake drum with some plywood shims.  A few good strikes with a sledge and it popped right off.  All the bearings were toast.  I was wondering why it sounded so bad.  The clutch is off to Rick for a rebuild.  Small victories.

This the left side.

Supposed to look like the right.

Used a washer.

Floor sanded and cleared.

My shop mate.

Old main shaft used as a driver.

Shims to support the brake drum base.

Removed.

Made a little progress.  The right final drive was a mess.  I sent the hand clutch to Rick (MO) for rebuilding.  While it was out, I got the final drive cleaned and refurbished.  Notice that there was no inner bearing.  It had rusted away long ago.  Even the race was trash.  Driving that race in was tough with it inside the drive.  All new seals and bearings.  Once I get the clutch back it will be ready for installation.  Working these final drives is tough work!

All disassembled.

Race.

Race and bearing?

New axle seal.

New race installed.

All back together.

Steve, I am a couple weeks behind you, just tore my final drive apart today. The snap ring that sits between the seal and outer race next to the break housing, did you pull that out? I had to slip the race out between the bull gear that I loosened off. Can't imagine how one can get the snap ring out

KTM911,
Edit--No I didn't pull that snap ring.  I didn't see the need.  It looks like a bear inside there though!

Steve,
Did you install the large outside seal first, before the shaft went in? Some discussion on WD tractors on another post . Just wondered?
